"UUJustice Florida has been working for several years with a group called Resilience System. They have set up a communication network in central and south Florida and now are reaching to include us here in the Panhandle. They function on many different levels in areas of need after a disaster of any sort. Here specifically they are working on hurricane relief. What they do is set up a fast flexible communication network to let people know what is going on and where. They have lots of different areas of expertise. Right now they are deploying university students to identify people in need of services, to collect data and spread information about where help is available. The data will be collected and shared with agencies who provide help in order to improve future disaster responses. The main people this group is looking for are minority neighborhoods and neighborhoods of immigrants. These are groups that are more likely to be overlooked by the larger agencies, or who might be frightened to come forward or not know how to find help. They are looking for what is going on in the disaster areas to find gaps or unequal outreach in services. There are daily conference calls with updates about what is actually going on, with traveling members of the group reporting in. They are largely funded by grants.
Since Pensacola did not suffer grave damage we are in the network for future needs as well as current offerings. One significant current offering we have is Brian Hansen's Tyson relief capacity. He immediately mobilized the resources and capacity of that large organization and brought food and water to Panama City eastside suburb of Callaway, Fl Walmart Supercenter, 725 N Tyndall Pkwy, Panama City, FL 32504 parking lot on October 15th to begin offering hot meals and take-home packages of food. We are all proud of Brian! We have also provided local networking with Movement for Change, NAACP and others.
Safest route with fewest turns and construction is to take I-10 eastbound all the way to US 231, turn southbound and follow all the way to to Fla Hwy 30A which starts out going east, then curves south, the Walmart is on the right near E 7th, look for Jimmy Johns and Starbucks on the left side.
Wrappers and packagers are needed asap early on TUESDAY AM and activities will continue into Saturday. Packing and wrapping til 1PM AND DISTRIBUTION FROM 1 TIL 4.
WE WILL KNOW SHORTER ROUTES BACK AND FORTH AFTER THE FIRST DAY, THIS WILL GET EASIER.
COME AND IF YOU ARE STOPPED AT ROADBLOCK OR CHECKPOINT, TELL THEM WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND WHY AS PER THIS NOTE. PRINT A COPY AND TAKE IT WITH YOU.
In December our 5th Sunday plate will go to Hurricane Michael relief. The decision of where the money will be donated can be decided at the Social Justice meeting on October 28th after the service. "
